After a tumultuous few years, Demi Lovato is back with another single to pave the way for the upcoming release of her seventh studio album, Dancing with the Devil…the Art of Starting Over. The four-minute track titled, “Dancing with the Devil,” details the spiral Demi experienced leading up to her 2018 relapse, and the subsequent overdose that placed her name in media headlines everywhere.
With piano chords pulsing in the background, the song begins with Demi gently singing, “It’s just a little red wine, I’ll be fine/Not like I wanna do this, every night…I think I’ve earned it, feels like it’s worth it/In my mind, mind.”
As the singer’s voice began to bellow, she sings, “I told you I was okay, but I was lyin’/ I was dancing with the devil/Out of control/Almost made it to heaven/It was closer than you know.”
This song is raw, emotional, and completely eye-opening into Demi’s state of mind before and during her drug overdose. It details her “twisted reality,” and how she bargained with herself and justified her recent drug use.
Fans can hear more of Demi’s story when her sure-fire album drops next Friday, Apr. 2. In the meantime, watch the award-winning singer’s YouTube Originals performance of her single, “Dancing with the Devil,” above.
