For years, Solange has been known as or referred to as Beyonce’s little sister, but the 30-year-old Houston, Texas native is much more than that – just look to her recent Grammy win and fashion prowess for proof. Solange recently met with Teen Vogue to pose for the cover of their coveted “Music Issue,” but first, she sat down to write a letter to her teenage self, detailing the trials and triumphs she would have to look forward to as she got older.
Keen on spilling the beans about the good, bad, and ugly that life has to offer, Solo opened her letter saying, “there will be fear. a lot of it. there will be triumph. a lot of it. there will be constellations you want to reach for but can’t put your finger on. you will trace them like the scars on your body you got from trouble and the times of your life. you will take the long way to get to these Orions. the long way will become a theme in your life, but a journey you learn to love.”
While informing her younger self about what to look out for in the future, Solo goes on to cover the importance of a name – and the names she was once called: “crazy, ugly, attention-seeking, weirdo.”
Raw and beautifully written, Solange’s very open piece of prose delves into the makings of the humble and unapologetic woman we’ve been introduced to in recent years. (And we’re nothing less than thankful for such a real piece of mind.)
Solo ended the letter to her teenage self by drawing a metaphorical picture of the world’s “beauty” and its places “unknown” – though it took a few days for her to get there.
“there will be pain, there will be doubt there will be beauty, there will be the unknown. there will be so many moments of joy and delight that the whole universe will feel painted in hues of amber and wonder. there will be times you are so sad you can’t lift your head. and there will be times you are so happy that the sensation of life knocks you down. but most importantly, there will be you. a whole, whole lot of it. and you will feel good about who she is and who she is still becoming.”
