Looking to raise America’s standard of beauty, Sony Pictures announced Amy Schumer as the new face of Barbie in its upcoming, live-action film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie studio tapped the Trainwreck actress to portray your daughter’s favorite doll to try to “put a contemporary spin on beauty, feminism and identity.” Although various visions and plot changes have been submitted for this project over time, Mattel and Sony producers – Walter F. Parkes, Laurie MacDonald and Amy Pascal – decided to go outside the box last year and hired three writers to scribe different screenplays. Television producer Hilary Winston, best known for her work on My Name is Earl (2005) and Community (2009), received the green light for her script, but Collider reports Schumer and her sister, Kim Caramele, are expected to rework Winston’s cinematic vision.
The comedienne’s portrayal of Mattel’s iconic figurine is sure to cause some controversy as Amy’s curves and fiery persona don’t necessarily define the Barbie brand. But what people must realize is Schumer is actually the perfect Barbie: Both are career-oriented women with several streams of revenue (with several dream houses, cars, an RV, and jet – Barbie is definitely wealthier than Amy).
Collider describes the movie plot best.
“In a land of Barbies where one woman slowly awakens to the fact that she doesn’t fit in. She is expelled from the idealistic land and journeys to the real world, where she discovers that being unique is an asset.” Who could play this better than Amy Schumer? We’ll wait.
