Netflix Picks Up Justin Simien’s ‘Dear White People’ as a 10-Part TV Series, Controversy Erupts

By Amber McKynzie @amackgizzles · On February 9, 2017

Let the controversy begin because Samantha White is coming to a broadcast (and small screen) near you.

Netflix announced its latest original series, yesterday (Feb. 8): a 10-episode TV adaptation of writer-director Justin Simien’s 2014 independent film, Dear White People. Much like the film, the 10-episode series will address many issues that exist between Black and White culture i.e. White people dressing up in Black face for Halloween, the use of the N-word, and the concept of straight hair.

For those who may have missed the movie’s original release, DWP is it the name of the lead character’s (Samantha White) “racially-motivated” college radio show. While educational and forward-thinking, the series that was created to push America’s racial envelope and make people think is being challenged by the “majority” population for being anti-White.

As a response to Netflix’s racially-stimulated new series, White subscribers are calling for a nationwide boycott of the multi-billion-dollar streaming service. (A service worth $41 billion to be exact). They even turned to Twitter to spread awareness about the need to refrain from supporting a service that (actually) houses content for all demographics.

Now that Trump’s in office, it seem like crowds of people are creeping out from under their figurative bridge and trolling for unnecessary racial conflict. But fans of the film and upcoming show have a clear message for anyone attempting to tear down Simien and the powers that be at Netflix: #FuckThatSh-t.
