According to TMZ, Jay-Z offered Prince’s estate something like $40 million to acquire the rights to the late artist’s unreleased music. The celebrity hub reports the multimillionaire allegedly flew Prince’s only full-blooded sibling, Tyka Nelson, and her husband, Maurice Phillips, to New York for a private meeting. While money doesn’t seem to be a thing when it comes to putting the Purple One’s most prized sounds in the right hands, Tyka doesn’t have the final say on the sale of her brother’s music.
All of Prince’s brothers and sisters and the trust managing the estate have to sign off on any changes made to the estate.
But while reports claim Hov isn’t the only one in the running for Prince’s music vault, Billboard reports L. Londell McMillan, an advisor to the estate, has “no knowledge of any discussions in [TMZ’s] report.” He went on to say “there is no sale [of Prince’s music assets], and those responsible for the assets are not in discussions with anyone regarding a sale.”
Although the music might not be for sale, the licensing is. McMillian told Billboard that “the estate is considering offers, including bids from all three major labels, to license – not purchase – Prince’s catalog and unreleased material.”
