In today’s age, money, power and shiny cars are everything, especially when you’re a rapper. But Rapper Dee-1 has never fit into a mold, and the release of his latest video, “No Car Note,” is no exception!
Let’s face it, people. We live in a world where money is [usually] everything. It’s a definitive, tangible, greedy, I-get-things-done, social divider that stems from a small, thin, rectangular piece of paper – and for some reason has the ability to make people do crazy things. But not Dee-1.
In his recent visuals, the NOLA native addresses the single most important issue that entertainers face: finances (and not knowing how to handle them). As the video begins to roll, Dee informs fans that “In 2016, the average payment for someone buying a new car was $503 per month,” but unlike many of his counterparts, he wasn’t one of the millions of people that “balled out” on a car. In fact, he’s his opening credits boast about his 1998 Honda Accord, and how he loves living in a world with no car note!
To get the song’s message across, the man formally known as David Augustine taps his inner superhero, Dee Incredible, to let people know it’s okay to be smart with your money. “Man, somebody messaged me on Instagram saying they don’t listen to my music because I don’t drive a brand new fancy car like a real rapper.” He continues, “Man, I’m trying to be smart with my money, and I actually I’m in love with my car. Plus, I ain’t got no car note!”
As soon as the beat drops, Dee-1 let’s loose, saying, “I don’t care what they drive, I don’t mind how they roll/I don’t want what they got, so what if my car old/I love my ’98 Honda, think I’m gonna let it go?/Nope. Nope.”
The gospel rapper preaches the importance about being financially savvy by letting the world know while some people are running to dealerships the moment they receive their first check, he’s walking straight to the bank to deposit his money. Why? ‘Cause he ain’t got no car note!
